In a groundbreaking move on Dec. 18, Raw Commissioner Stephanie McMahon proclaimed that the Royal Rumble event on Sunday, Jan. 28, will play host to the first-ever Women’s Royal Rumble Match, granting the winner a championship opportunity at WrestleMania 34 in New Orleans.
WWE has been making plans for the Women’s Royal Rumble Match since at least September and it’s a big reason why Mandy Rose, Sonya Deville, Ruby Riott, Liv Morgan and Sarah Logan were promoted to the main roster last month.
WWE originally planned on featuring 15 competitors in the Women’s Royal Rumble Match, but with the recent call-ups, decided to make it 20. However, based on the positive feedback to the announcement, WWE is now leaning towards making the event even more grandiose by featuring 30 female competitors. If WWE goes in that direction, past WWE female wrestlers will appear as surprise entrants (much like the 30-Man Royal Rumble Match), as well as using women from NXT.
Champions will not be in the bout since the winner earns a championship opportunity at WrestleMania 34. As things stand now, the Raw competitors would consist of Alicia Fox, Asuka, Bayley, Dana Brooke, Mandy Rose, Mickie James, Nia Jax, Paige, Sasha Banks and Sonya Deville. Competitors from SmackDown LIVE would include Becky Lynch, Carmella, Lana, Liv Morgan, Natalya, Naomi, Ruby Riott, Sarah Logan and Tamina to bring the total to 19.
