At Battleground on July 23, Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Lana, Natalya and Tamina will square off in a Five-Way Elimination Match with a SmackDown Women’s Title opportunity at SummerSlam on the line.
While discussing the match on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that WWE is currently planning to do a Fatal 4-Way Elimination Match at SummerSlam on August 20 with the Raw Women’s Championship at stake.
Based on recent storyline developments, the match will most likely have Alexa Bliss putting the Raw Women’s Championship on the line against Sasha Banks, Bayley, and Nia Jax.
Meltzer also provided an explanation for WWE booking multiple person matches, saying they’re able to protect wrestlers without having to write strong personal storylines.
“Well, you know, that’s what they’re doing a lot of right now,” Meltzer said. “The thing with multi-person matches is you can always gimmick the finishes so nobody has to lose and it’s easier for the bookers when you do that and plus when you have multiple person matches, inherently you’re not going to do strong personal storylines so you don’t have to worry about writing good stories because you know, you can do a little heat where they’re all mad at each other, but that’s all you can do in a multiple person match.”
