Following Thursday’s announcement that Renee Young will be guest commentator this Monday night on Raw, Young spoke to Cathy Kelley about the response she’s gotten and an important conversation she had with a longtime friend.
That longtime friend is JBL, who slid in her DMs to tell her to stay off social media.
“Well, JBL slid into my DMs, which was really nice. He actually had some really great words of encouragement and some advice. Mostly to not look on social media, which is very helpful,” Young told Kelley.
“But, yeah, it’s really cool to, of course, get some recognition from your peers and the people that you work with and the people that you look up to. I’m sure that you can resonate with this too, it’s like trying to be a part of this whole women’s evolution. For me to be able to knock this off means a lot to me, to be able to open the doors for hopefully more women, to be able to get this ball rolling and get our voices out there and have us finally be heard.”
Reactions to this groundbreaking announcement took over social media, as WWE Superstars, Legends, Hall of Famers and broadcast colleagues celebrated Young. JBL is among those who congratulated Young, which Kelley brought up.
Congrats to @ReneeYoungWWE on this wonderful achievement-commentary on @WWE Raw! Well deserved and I am so happy for you!!!! You deserve this and will do an outstanding job! Can’t wait to watch and listen. https://t.co/SQA4dC0aei

Besides being broadcast colleagues in WWE, there is a connection between JBL and Young as for about two months in 2015, they hosted a YouTube series called The JBL & Renee Show.
