Days after competing in the dangerous Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match, Charlotte Flair went under the knife.
According to Dave Meltzer in the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the former Women’s Champion underwent surgery on Tuesday to correct a ruptured breast implant.
“Charlotte had surgery on 6/19 to repair her ruptured implant from months back,” Meltzer wrote. “She’s taking this PPV cycle off to have everything taken care of for the time frame building SummerSlam.”
She was also pulled from WWE’s upcoming tour of Japan, which takes place on Friday, June 29 and Saturday, June 30, because of the surgery.
Flair’s implant ruptured sometime before WrestleMania 34 and she elected to hold off surgery to defend the SmackDown Women’s Championship against Asuka. Flair retained the title against “The Empress of Tomorrow,” but dropped it two days later when Carmella used her Money in the Bank opportunity to defeat “The Queen.”
WWE officials then wanted Flair to continue working through Backlash so that she could have a rematch against Carmella on pay-per-view (which Flair lost). Flair then decided to continue working through the European tour because it pays well. Then on May 8 on SmackDown LIVE, Flair qualified for the Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match with a win over Peyton Royce, which delayed her surgery even further.
Her surgery was expected to take place this week after she canceled a scheduled appearance at ACE Comic Con in Seattle, Washington this weekend on the same day news of her upcoming surgery came out (May 9). In ACE Comic Con’s announcement on social media that Charlotte had pulled out of the event, they revealed it was due to surgery (though not specifically saying the type of surgery). They quickly deleted that bit of personal info and just said she canceled and that Carmella will replace her at the event.
Charlotte kept her medical issue hidden for awhile, but she then did a magazine photo shoot for ESPN The Magazine’s annual “The Body Issue,” which features athletes in nude and semi-nude photographs. Photographers shot around her ruptured implant.
Ironically, the initial news of Charlotte’s surgery came shortly after both Royce and Carmella suffered bruises on their breasts from wrestling her.
Royce showed off her bruised chest from wrestling Charlotte just hours before the news came out.
The week before, Carmella posted revealing bruises on her chest from wrestling Charlotte.
Carmella added, “Thanks for the battle scars, queen.”
After missing SmackDown LIVE this week, Charlotte had this Twitter exchange with Billie Kay following her loss to Becky Lynch.
Oh man you are totes jealous!! @PeytonRoyceWWE & I’s bond is simply… #IIconic ❤️
Sorry but tea time is over 🤣— Billie Kay (@BillieKayWWE) June 20, 2018
Dear Billie:
My best friend beat up your best friend.
Sincerely,
— Charlotte Flair (@MsCharlotteWWE) June 20, 2018
This should set up a tag team match pitting Flair and Lynch again The IIconics, either next week on SmackDown LIVE or upon Charlotte’s return in a month or so. If they do it next week, it will almost certainly result in Charlotte being written off television for a few weeks because of The IIconics. If they don’t do it, then that means Charlotte will simply disappear for a few weeks.
