Prior to the match, Kamela had not wrestled since November 4, 2016. While speculation on her absence points to an undisclosed injury, that was never confirmed.
Kamela, a native of Scottsdale, Arizona, was signed to a WWE developmental contract in 2016 after trying out for Tough Enough the year before. After failing to make the final cut for the show, she began wrestling training with former WWE stars Rikishi and David “Gangrel” Heath at Knokx Pro Entertainment in California. She was then signed to a contract after participating in a WWE tryout at the Performance Center.
