During a media conference call this morning promoting NXT TakeOver: Toronto, Triple H denied rumors that WWE officials had originally wanted someone other than Mickie James to face NXT Women’s Champion Asuka at the event.
“I’ve seen the rumors out there about other people being attempted to be grabbed for [Mickie’s spot],” Triple H said.
Triple H added that he went with Mickie because he wanted more time for the other women in NXT to develop. He feels she is very skilled and could handle the pressure.
“I felt like [Mickie] and Asuka would tear it up,” Triple H added. “I want to re-inforce that Mickie was not the consolation prize for us in anyway. She is the person that we went at.”
The rumor can be attributed to Dave Meltzer, who reported last month in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that WWE approached Trish Stratus for the spot.
