CM Punk, who is scheduled to make his mixed martial arts debut this evening at UFC 203, sat down with MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani to discuss a number of things including his match with Mickey Gall and his former life as a professional wrestler. You can see the interview in it’s entirety at this link. Below are highlights:
– Punk is currently working hard to cut and maintain his weight for this evening’s fight. He weighed in at 170 lbs on Friday, and says it’s not fun and it’s not something he’s ever had to get use to before.
– Punk says that he’s considering using his old WWE theme – “Cult of Personality” – as his UFC walk-out music. It should be noted however, that Brock Lesnar planned to use his WWE entrance music for UFC 200, but instead went with “Enter Sandman.”
– Punk notes that his wife and former WWE Diva’s Champion AJ Lee will not be watching the fight from the crowd. It was reported on FS1’s “Evolution of Punk” that AJ wanted to watch her husband from the arena floor. Punk says that she’s too much of a familiar face, and he’d rather not have disrespectful fans “yell junk at her.”
– Punk notes the irony and symbolism in making his MMA debut in the same arena wherein he walked out on his professional wrestling career – the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
– Punk discusses his current $1M lawsuit with WWE, and continues to say Vince McMahon is bankrolling the entire process as a slight against Punk.
– Punk says that WWE is “out of their minds,” and directs his ire at upper management as well as members of the WWE roster. He calls the new generation of Superstars “slobs,” saying: “I’d see a guy take their wrist tape off and just throw it on the ground, right next to a garbage can.”
– He goes on to put over Bob Holly, saying if the former Hardcore Champion was still there, nobody would be “doing that s**t.” He says Holly was always a great enforcer who helped keep the younger talents in line, noting that there’s no room for someone like Holly given todays PG era of anti-bullying.
– When asked what he’s most looking forward to this weekend, Punk replies with one simple word: “Winning.”
