WWE announced Friday morning that Alberto Del Rio was officially released from the company, without wishing the former WWE Champion the “best in his future endeavors.” Del Rio held a press conference later Friday afternoon in Mexico City. Below are notes from the conference:
– Paige was in attendance, however she did not sit down at the table.
– Del Rio admitted that he didn’t feel comfortable in WWE and was considering leaving several months back. He says he felt he had done everything there was to do in WWE and was losing his passion for wrestling.
– Del Rio says his release was mutually-agreed upon and all parties left on good terms.
– Del Rio says that he will not be subjected to the standard 90-day no compete policy, and is already taking bookings throughout Mexico, America, and Europe.
– Del Rio says he’s currently in negotiations with AAA, CMLL, and Elite, but doesn’t want to be exclusive anywhere. In a point of confusion, he later said that Elite hasn’t contacted him. He only wants to work 60 matches a year and has already started to think
– Del Rio says he wants to retire in two years and is already in talks to work in management for a Mixed Martial Arts company. He’s also in talks to become a regular commentary for another MMA promotion.
– Del Rio stresses that he would like to return to Arena Mexico.
– Del Rio will once again be wrestling under the name “Alberto El Patron,” as indicated by a banner hanging behind his table.
– Del Rio did not discuss his wellness policy violation, nor that of his girlfriend Paige.
On the subject of Alberto Del Rio and Paige, World Association of Wrestling (WAW) out of the United Kingdom announced that former WWE Alberto El Patron will be appearing for the promotion on September 16th and 17th in Norwich, England. WAW is owned by Paige’s father, Ricky Knight.
