Have you ever wondered who creates the increasingly shiny and elaborate outfits worn by the WWE Superstars?
For years, many of the costumes you saw on television came from a woman named Sandra Gray. After the veteran seamstress and designer retired in 2015, WWE hired Sarath Ton to create a wardrobe for its cast of colorful characters.
While wrestling for various independent promotions in the New England area, Ton drew attention for his elaborate, self-designed outfits and began getting requests for gear from fellow wrestlers, including Sasha Banks. When she joined WWE, he began getting requests from some of the women.
“I’ve done Summer Rae‘s gear, and I did Paige‘s purple gear that she debuted in,” he said in this mini-documentary talking about his work.
While his work will live forever in action figure form, it also captured the heart of Sasha.
“Probably the most lasting relationship I made because of my work is Sasha Banks,” he said in the documentary. “I’ve been making her gear since she first started [wrestling]. Literally, just when I first met her, I knew she needed gear. I let her know, like, ‘Hey, I got you.’ It’s been working out ever since, obviously.”
Her look is unique from head to toe with money sign medallions, thick decorative chains, cool blinder shades, dark armbands, blue painted nails, purple-red hair, more specially designed jewelry, and lots of “The Boss” — “Boss” T-Shirt (“Legit Boss” in red or black), multi-finger-wide “Boss” rings, “Boss” necklace, and even a gold banded “Boss” stamper to sign autographs “The Boss” way.
“I’ve always known that I wanted to be different. I wanted to stand out,” Banks explained in an interview with the Miami Herald in April 2015, “so my gear is very elaborate, very blingy, very loud because I want people to notice me, want to look like me. “The Boss” necklace, the ring. I want everything big.”
With Banks as one of his clients, Ton is the finisher behind her big wardrobe inspirations.
“I haven’t been able to pick out what colors I wanted or scheme,” Banks said. “I just had him do it because now he knows what I want. He envisions it. I just tell him, ‘I want to look the best, the greatest. Just do your thing,’ and he always makes me look amazing.”
