Details On How Owen Hart’s Death Is Handled In New WWE DVD

Owen – Hart of Gold is WWE’s most controversial DVD and Blu-ray release in awhile.

Available on December 7th, the biggest selling point is the first ever long form profile of Owen Hart by WWE since his death in 1999, which for many fans will make the DVD an interesting one.

Owen’s widow (Martha Hart) has taken legal action to try to prevent WWE from releasing any action figures, videos or any other merchandise bearing his likeness. Earlier this year, WWE decided to go ahead and produce a feature DVD and Blu-ray set on Owen without her approval.

Owen died on May 23, 1999, when an equipment malfunction occurred during his entrance from the rafters of Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri, at WWE’s Over the Edge pay-per-view event. His death is breezed past relatively in the documentary portion of the video release. There’s no mention of what happened or that the show continued that night. Clips from the Raw tribute show for Hart the night after Over the Edge are briefly show.

Shortly after the accident, Bret Hart publicly supported Martha in a lawsuit for negligence against WWE, he now looks back on things a little differently.

“It was an accident, just a horrible accident, nobody could know how bad it could go that day,” Bret said.

Clips are shown of peers and family appearing emotional and wishing Owen was still alive. This includes archive footage of the late “British Bulldog” Davey Boy Smith, who said Owen “was a great husband, a great father. Owen never had a bad quality.”
