During Raw Monday night, sparingly seen WWE Superstar Curtis Axel went on Twitter to publicly vent about his current standing in the sports-entertainment organization.
“I’m the son of Mr Perfect for Christ sake!!! And I’m damn good! The sidelines ain’t no place for a starter! @WWE,” he wrote.
Under the ring name Michael McGillicutty, Axel joined the main roster in 2010 as a member of The Nexus. He had previously wrestled at WWE’s developmental territory Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW) and was part of the second season of NXT. In 2011, he won the WWE Tag Team Championship with David Otunga as a member of The Nexus. After their association ended that year, he was largely confined to wrestling on WWE Superstars and NXT.
In May 2013, Axel reignited his career, paying tribute to his father, “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig, and his grandfather, Larry “The Axe” Hennig, and won the Intercontinental Championship with Paul Heyman as his manager. Though he was ‘Paul Heyman Guy,’ Axel was required to play second fiddle to Brock Lesnar and the middle man between Heyman and CM Punk during their heated rivalry. Heyman ended his association with Axel that November and he lost the Intercontinental Championship to Big E a few days later.
Since then, Axel has been floating around WWE. He gained some steam with “Axelmania,” a character impersonating Hulk Hogan, but it was dropped in July when WWE severed all ties with the legendary wrestler. Since then, Axel has been confined to WWE Superstars, WWE Main Event and house shows.
Several fans responded to Axel’s tweet, to which he responded:
