Billed as a cannibalistic headhunter from the African jungles, “The Ugandan Giant” Kamala was one of wrestling’s most terrifying heels during the 1980s and ’90s.
Barefoot and clad only in a loin cloth, face paint, and moons and stars painted on his chest, Kamala came to the ring wearing a ritual African tribal mask and carrying a spear, often slapping his ample belly as well. A disturbing enough sight for opponents made all the worse when you add in the fact that Kamala stood 6-foot-7 and weighed over 350 pounds.
In recent years, however, the man behind the mask and face paint has suffered from a number of major health problems. His real name is James Harris and he had both of his legs amputated below the knee due to complications from diabetes — the left leg in November 2011 and the right leg in April 2012.
Now 68 years old, Harris lives in Coldwater, Mississippi but struggles to make ends meet as he relies on a monthly disability check and selling handmade wooden chairs online.
“Don’t feel sorry for me,” Harris said in 2014.
“If you want to, encourage me. Embrace me. I’m going to be alright — just like I’ve always been.
“I’m still Kamala.”
